This study theoretically and quantitatively analyses the phenomenon of a return to the analogue and its value within a digital context. The study does so by introducing the coined term and key concept “analogue-trace” as a means to reinvestigate use-value in contemporary digitalisation and its association with the qualities of analogue technologies. The term analogue-trace is derived from a combination of two words, one technical in meaning and the other a theoretical referent. The first term, analogue, points to methods of reproduction that are not digital, such as 35mm dark room processed photography or needle and groove phonographic records. This exhibition features the exploration and processes involved in graphically representing data provided by the University of Wollongong’s School of Biological Sciences and Institute for Conservation Biology. The research data provided was a large set of numerical and location based information, in spreadsheet format, derived from seed bank analysis of various NSW north coast locations.
